Torhild Ramberg Studio is the only fulltime school in Norway teaching the sight-size technique.
Through intensive and personalized critiques, the students are trained in drawing and painting, colour theory, and craftsmanship. Lectures on technique, perspective and composition are also part of the education.
The students learn to grind their own oil colours, stretch and size canvases, and prepare painting mediums.
2009-2010 Calendar:
The academic year is divided into three terms: The autumn term, from September to December, winter term, January-March, and spring term, April-June.
Evening class:
An evening class is offered one night a week, lasting one or several terms.
Regular class time is 6 hours per day, from 9.00 am to 4.00 pm, Monday- Thursday. Fridays are designated to individual projects. Full time students have access to the studio on the weekends. Torhild Ramberg will provide daily, individual critiques of the students work. An assistant teacher also makes rounds in the studio.
In addition to regular class time, the studies are complemented by weekly lectures on art history, and one night a week the school arranges life drawing. The nude model poses to enable students to gain an understanding of the human figures rhythm and anatomic structure.
1. Level:
Students are introduced to the sight- size technique, learning to stand back from the easel and see the image as a whole from the start. Using the sight- size technique they draw the nude model 3 hours each day, and draw from plaster casts half days.
Plaster cast:
The prototypes are copies from the antique.
The study of the plaster cast is a method for training the student`s eye. By executing several refined cast drawings the students are introduced to the demanding practice of sight- size drawing, and will have strengthened and perfected the ability to model form correctly. Mastering cast drawing, the student will have laid the foundation for further development.
2. Level:
Students now learn to grind pigments and make their own oil colours. They also learn to prepare various mediums for oil painting and stretch and size canvases.
According to their level of experience, the students progress from cast drawing to portrait drawing and still life. Spending time setting up the still life, students have the first opportunity to develop their compositional skills. They now get to know the flesh palette for portrait and figure and the colours for still - life and landscape projects. Beginning portrait studies are done in charcoal. The student spends about 15 hours completing a portrait study. After 4- 5 studies, the student executes oil painting using the flesh palette.
3. Level:
Painted Figure Study:
The students work on drawing or painting the model from life at every level of development. To paint the human figure is the greatest challenge at the Studio and the ultimate goal in the student education.
4. Level:
Advanced Portrait Painting:
The students learn the importance of placing the subject in space and to create a portrait incorporating the elements of composition. They will create a sitting for the model and paint from the setup. Students can use symbolism, place the model in costume, and create a mood or a commentary about the person being painted.
